Single-Hung Replacement Windows

One of the most classic and recognizable window styles is the single-hung window, also known as single sash or single-hung sash windows. In this style, a single sash rests on the window sill, the bottom window, and that can be raised or lowered for ventilation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Single-Hung Windows

What are sash windows?

The sash is the part that moves within the window frame and holds the glass. Single-hung windows are also known as single-sash windows because a single slash slides up and down within the frame.

What’s the difference between a single-hung and double-hung window?

The difference between single-hung and double-hung windows is the number of sashes that move. A single-hung window has one fixed, or non-operable, sash and one operable, or moveable, sash. A double-hung window has two operable, or moveable, sashes.

Why should I use single-hung windows?

Single-hung windows have less air leaks, are cheaper than double-hung windows and are more historically accurate if you’re replacing windows in an older home. Because the upper sash doesn’t move, it can be many different shapes such as arched or pointed.

On the other side, single-hung windows are difficult to repair and clean because the top sash can’t be removed.

Are single-hung windows energy efficient?

Single-hung windows are very energy efficient. Because only one sash moves, you’re much less likely to get air leaks.

How do I clean single-hung windows from inside the house?

On select product lines, the bottom sash of single-hung windows tilts in, making it easy to clean both the interior and exterior surfaces from inside the home. Since the top sash is stationary, the exterior surface of the upper half will need to be cleaned from outside the home. View step-by-step cleaning instructions in this video.

Why should I use single-hung windows?

Because only one sash is moveable on a single-hung window, they are great for homeowners who are looking for potential cost savings replacing multiple windows and for replacement on the first floor of a home. Single-hung windows can be slightly more efficient than double-hung windows, as there are fewer moving parts which reduces the opportunity for air infiltration.
