The sash is the part that moves within the window frame and holds the glass. Single-hung windows are also known as single-sash windows because a single slash slides up and down within the frame.
The difference between single-hung and double-hung windows is the number of sashes that move. A single-hung window has one fixed, or non-operable, sash and one operable, or moveable, sash. A double-hung window has two operable, or moveable, sashes.
Single-hung windows have less air leaks, are cheaper than double-hung windows and are more historically accurate if you’re replacing windows in an older home. Because the upper sash doesn’t move, it can be many different shapes such as arched or pointed.
On the other side, single-hung windows are difficult to repair and clean because the top sash can’t be removed.
Single-hung windows are very energy efficient. Because only one sash moves, you’re much less likely to get air leaks.
On select product lines, the bottom sash of single-hung windows tilts in, making it easy to clean both the interior and exterior surfaces from inside the home.
